Afghanistan School Days
The academic year at the Kids 4 Afghan Kids funded school in Afghanistan is March through November. December, January and February are just too cold for the children to walk to school and it is too expensive to heat the school. In March 2002 the school year began with over 500 boys and 160 girls registered. Three class sessions are held daily with boys in the morning, girls at noon and boys again in late afternoon.
When the school first opened in March 2001, there were 465 students attending with another 400 on a waiting list. Grades 1 through 6 are taught and the students are assigned to a grade not by their age but by their ability and level of mastery. Classes are held throughout the day, from early morning until late afternoon. Students presently sit on the floor as there are no desks or chairs for them yet. But, they are eager to learn, no matter what the environment.
Our school provides a simple lunch of * loaf of Afghan bread every day. Once a week students also get sougi (cream of wheat cooked with oil and sugar). Recipes on request.
